Visual Narratives: The Art of Photographic Storytelling (Q2)

In this inspiring virtual enrichment course, middle school students will discover how photographers use visual storytelling to document history, spark social change, and share human experiences across cultures. Students will study the work of influential photographers like Dorothea Lange, Steve McCurry, and contemporary photojournalists to understand how a single image or photo series can convey complex narratives and evoke deep emotions. Through guided photo appreciation sessions, they'll learn to "read" photographs by analyzing symbolism, context, sequencing, and the stories behind iconic images that changed the world. Students will explore different storytelling genres including documentary photography, photo essays, and visual journalism while developing their own narrative projects on themes like community, identity, or personal history. The course emphasizes the ethical responsibilities of visual storytellers and how photographers make choices about what to show, what to leave out, and how to represent their subjects with dignity. By examining both historical and contemporary works, students will develop critical viewing skills and learn to craft meaningful photo narratives that communicate ideas beyond what words alone can express.
